Israel allows extra building materials into Gaza

ISRAEL will being to allow more building materials into the battered Gaza Strip tomorrow, a Palestinian official said today.

Deputy Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa said the shipments were allowed under a UN-brokered deal to facilitate reconstruction in the beseiged territory.

He said that Palestinian inspectors would be deployed on the Gaza side of the border next week to oversee the imports.

An Israeli defence official said she did not know when the imports are to begin.

Until now, Israel only permitted shipments of building materials for UN-supervised projects, but not Gaza’s private sector.

The state stokes fears that Hamas militants would use the shipments for military use to justify its embargo.

Israel and Hamas fought a 50-day war this summer.

A Palestinian unity government replacing Hamas rule in Gaza will oversee reconstruction.
