Celebration in Glasgow for Football for Change

Hundreds of street soccer players turn out in blazing sunshine at Glasgow’s George Square for Scotland’s largest Football for Change festival

Hundreds of street soccer players turned out in blazing sunshine yesterday at Glasgow’s George Square for Scotland’s largest Football for Change festival.

The city centre Street Soccer festival saw knockout competitions for both the Scottish Men’s and Scottish Women’s Homeless Cups.

David Duke, chief executive of organisers Street Soccer Scotland, said: “We know our projects across the country have a positive impact in improving physical and mental health issues, supporting people with addiction problems and working with those who are currently homeless.”

Places in the men’s and women’s Scottish squads for this year’s Homeless World Cup tournament in Chile were up for grabs for the best performers.

The Scottish men’s team will be competing in Chile to become the first country to win the Homeless World Cup for a third time.

Glasgow Old Firm legends Tom Boyd of Celtic and Mark Hately of Rangers were on hand to offer support and tips at the PwC Street Soccer Festival.
