Boxing preview: Eubank Jr v Saunders

Undefeated, young and British, who will win?

A real grudge match is on the cards between Britain’s Billy Joe Saunders and Chris Eubank Jr, who are set to fight on the undercard of the Dereck Chisora v Tyson Fury main event at London’s Excel Arena on November 29.

The fight is a WBO middleweight title eliminator, but of far more importance as far as the stakes are concerned is pride, given the extent of the dislike that exists between both fighters.

In terms of talent there is very little to separate the two. Saunders, a former Olympian, remains undefeated after 20 fights with 11 KOs on his record. Trained by the legendary Jimmy Tibbs in East London, the 25-year-old hails from the Romany travelling community for whom boxing is in the blood. He is rightly considered one of the best British prospects to take a world title sooner rather than later.

Eubank Jr is also considered a hot prospect. Managed by his famous and flamboyant father, Chris Eubank Sr, the 25-year-old from Brighton is also undefeated, winning 18 out of 18 as a pro with 13 KOs.

He carries immense power and is a terrific combination puncher. If anything, Eubank Jr is even more pleasing on the eye than his illustrious old man, a fact the older Eubank is always eager to stress in interviews.

Though Eubank Jr lacks the vast amateur experience of Saunders, he’s benefited from having sparred with the best in the game, including Carl Froch prior to Froch’s last fight against George Groves.

He has also spent time training and sparring at Floyd Mayweather’s gym in Vegas and in Cuba, proof that when it comes to succeeding in the sport he’s as committed and dedicated as they come.

I pick Eubank Jr to keep his undefeated record intact on November 29 but he will have to put in the performance of his life in order to do so.
