While We’re Young (15) Directed by Noah Baumbach 4/5

A NEW York middle-aged couple start living vicariously through their new-found twenty-something friends in a comedy that smacks of Woody Allen but proves to be subtler and far funnier.

Josh and Cornelia (Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts) are plagued by their married friends with babies but their lives are soon overturned when they meet free spirits Jamie (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried) who have forgone modern technology and make their own ice cream.

It is painfully funny to watch Josh and Cornelia being seduced by the younger couple’s youth and enthusiasm while writer-director Noah Baumbach, capturing middle-aged angst along with the pressures of older newbie parents to a tee, sets it against the bravado of youth.

With a smart script full of hilarious gems and superb performances from Stiller and Watts this is a superlative comedy drama.
