Student punched by cop at free education demo ‘was rushed to hospital’

A student was rushed to hospital after being punched by a police officer during Wednesday’s free education demo, organisers said yesterday.

An eyewitness told the Star that an unidentified male student “got the full force of a police officer’s punch to his face” before being arrested during clashes in London.

Friends took the man straight to A&E to be treated for concussion when he was released without charge from Belgravia police station.

“The police had refused him medical treatment,” according to a National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts (NCAFC) statement.

The man was one of 11 students arrested but bailed without charge following the biggest student demonstration since the 2010 uprising against the fees rise.

Trouble first flared when the march reached Westminster.

Students were thrown to the ground and struck with batons as cops tried to stop them hauling down the barriers around Parliament Square.

The police reported that three officers “suffered minor injuries.”

Some 100 students staged a sit-down protest outside New Scotland Yard, while others waited outside Belgravia station until their comrades were released.

“We were shocked by how bad a state some of them were in when they came out,” said NCAFC spokeswoman Hattie Craig.

“One guy’s face was a real mess and he couldn’t see straight. Loads of them had black eyes.”

Ms Craig added that the fact that all 11 students were released without charge shows the arrests were “politically motivated and a tactic used to intimidate protesters.”

The police confirmed yesterday that two were arrested for affray, two for assault on police, one for criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon and one for violent disorder.

Two of the arrests came when students tried to charge into Tory HQ with wheelie bins.

At least one more arrest was made on Victoria Street when students lobbed paint bombs at the Business Department and eggs at a Starbucks store.
