The scandal of generation rent

Generation Rent’s finding that people in this country back rent controls 59 per cent to a mere 6.8 per cent is unsurprising.

That majorities even of Conservative and Liberal Democrat supporters back the move is a logical consequence of soaring rents in the private rented sector — which is itself growing rapidly as inflated house prices and declining wages price people out of buying homes.

This is an idea whose time has come. Ed Miliband has spoken of the need to prevent “excessive” rent rises through a cap based on market averages.

He’ll need to do more than that, though, to give hope Britain’s beleaguered renters.
