BOOK-LOVING residents in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, launched a fightback yesterday against the council’s plans to cut its public libraries.
Kirklees Council has announced plans to reduce the libraries budget from £6 million to £3.9m in the next financial year.

Huddersfield, Calderdale and Bradford branch of Unite Community has launched a campaign fighting the council’s plans, with a petition and a stall outside Huddersfield Central Library.

Unite Community activist Chris Strachan, who began the petition in his own community, said: “It’s going very well so far. The petition is against library cuts and against the use of volunteers to replace paid library staff. We are getting a good response from the public.”
