Review call for child protection

MPs have called for a review of child protection systems following evidence of widespread organised abuse across England in the wake of the Rotherham abuse scandal.

In a damning report, Parliament’s communities and local government committee condemned a watchdog for failing to lift the lid on Rotherham council’s inability to protect children.

Council officers must also be held to account for the “systemic” failings even if they have moved on to other areas, the committee said.

But the town is “not an outlier” for abuse and all councils must review their systems for protecting children, it added.
