French Open increases prize money and other sport in brief

Tennis: The French Open will pay total prize money of more than €25 million (£20.6m) this year, with the singles champions each receiving €1.65m (£1.36m).

Tournament director Gilbert Ysern said: "This significant increase is part of the four-year plan developed for the years 2013 to 2016."

Wimbledon is due to announce its prize money for this year's tournament later this month.

Last year the total prize pot was £22.56m.

Rugby: Super League leaders St Helens will be without second rower Willie Manu for up to two months with a dislocated and broken thumb.

The Tonga international sustained the injury in Saints' last-gasp 30-28 win at Castleford last Sunday and will be sidelined for six to eight weeks.

Saints will also be without prop Anthony Laffranchi for the Good Friday clash with Wigan after he sustained an arm injury against the Tigers.

Tennis: Novak Djokovic made a convincing start to the defence of his Masters title with a second-round thrashing of Albert Montanes.

The world number two, who received a first-round bye, ended Rafael Nadal's eight-year winning streak by the Mediterranean last year and needed just 45 minutes to dispatch Montanes 6-1 6-0.

The Serbian said: "I lost only one game so there are not too many bad things I can say about my game."

Football: Port Vale captain Doug Loft is undecided whether or not he will take legal action against Daniel Jones over the facial injuries that have brought a premature end to his season.

Loft was last week involved in a training ground altercation with then team mate Jones, who has since had his contract with the club terminated, as Vale prepared for their League One fixture against Notts County.

Football: The Syrian Football Association says a national youth team player has been killed in a mortar attack in the central city of Homs.

SFA President Salah Ramadan says Tarek Ghrair, 15, died yesterday when a mortar exploded near his home in Ghouta, a western district of Homs where the city's main stadium is located.

It was not clear if Ghrair was specifically targeted. Rebels fighting to oust President Bashar Assad from power have frequently fired mortars into Syria's cities under government control.
