CARLOS GARDEL arrived in Buenos Aires from Toulouse in 1893, with his mother Berthe. They were economic migrants and she worked as a laundress while he, a child prodigy, entertained at private parties.
Between 1917 and 1935, Gardel released over 750 songs, many his own compositions, with words by the best lyricists of the time.
All compilations will be arbitrary but his rich baritone’s effortless renditions of Buenos Aires Querido (My beloved Bs As), Volver (To Return), Arrabal Amargo (Bitter Neighbourhood) or Leguisamo Solo (Only Leguisamo) transport to the times when tango belonged exclusively to those who gave birth to it in the forsaken barrios of Buenos Aires where only love would insulate you “from their sorrows, mud and misery.”
Beware of the soulless imitations imported periodically to the West End. Listen to this instead.
