Midlothian Labour MP David Hamilton to stand down at general election

LEFT-WING Labour MP and Morning Star supporter David Hamilton has announced he will stand down at the general election in May.

The former miner who represents Midlothian has been an MP for 14 years.

He is currently the Scottish Labour whip in the Commons.

Lothian MSP Neil Findlay, who has campaigned with Mr Hamilton to secure justice for miners convicted in the 1984-85 strike, paid a warm tribute to the Midlothian MP.

“Davie was jailed during the strike and an active member of the Scottish NUM throughout,” he said.

“He has fully endorsed the campaign for justice for convicted miners and an inquiry into the strike.

“Let’s elect a Labour government to ensure that happens. Labour is committed to an inquiry — neither the Tories, Liberals or the SNP are.”

Labour’s shadow Scottish secretary Margaret Curran MP said Mr Hamilton was a “hero in Scottish Labour” who was “a fantastic MP” and would be “a real loss to Parliament.”
