TRAIN passengers are increasingly at risk of assault because CCTV and iPads are being used to replace station staff, rail union RMT’s conference heard yesterday.
Deputy general secretary Steve Hedley told delegates that, rather than maintaining a physical presence, bosses were issuing staff with tablet computers to monitor platforms.
He said CCTV had recorded a 44 per cent increase in assaults on passengers.
Conference unanimously backed a campaign against automation of station staff work and the decreasing standards of passenger service associated with them.
