SNP calls for boycott of 50 Lords nominations

THE SNP has called on other opposition parties not to nominate new peers in protest at Tory plans to pack the House of Lords with the party’s pals.

David Cameron is set to appoint at least 50 new peers this summer, costing taxpayers £1.3 million.

Both Labour and the Lib Dems promised democratic reform of the House of Lords in their election manifestos.

Now the SNP, which does not take up seats in the Lords, has challenged the two parties to refuse Mr Cameron’s invitation to appoint peers.

“It is clear that the place is now beyond reform and should be reconstituted on firm democratic principles,” said Angus MacNeil MP.

“Both Labour and the Lib ems claim to be parties that champion this cause, now they have a concrete opportunity to show that they are prepared to act on it.”

Jeremy Corbyn confirmed at the weekend that he would be prepared to back the boycott if he is elected Labour leader.
