Manchester City captain Steph Houhgton warned rival teams yesterday that City are gunning for more even more trophies next season.
Houghton put pen to paper on a new contract, committing her long-term future to the club, after lifting the Women’s Super League, FA and League Cup this season.
It wasn’t mean to be in the Champions League, where they were knocked out by eventual winners Lyon in the semi-finals, and Houhgton said the club are targeting an even better season in Europe as well as continuing their domestic dominance.
She said: “The last three years with Manchester City have been unbelievable and I am delighted to commit my long-term future to the club.
“Manchester City’s vision for growing the women’s game is what first attracted me to the club and the support and professionalism I have experienced from everyone at the club since joining the team in 2014 has shown their commitment to taking women’s football to the next level.
“The last 12 months have been incredible winning the Women’s Super League, the FA Cup and the League Cup and I am looking forward to working with the team next season to challenge for even more titles and hopefully make it even further in the Champions League.”
The England captain joined the club in January 2014, leading from the back and helping the team become the best team in the country, surpassing Arsenal and Chelsea in the space of a few years.
“I’ve only ever seen my future at the club,” she said. “This will be my fourth season and I’ve loved every single minute of it. I had no intention of going anywhere else and this is my home now.
“Ever since the first moment I arrived, I’ve been made to feel welcome here and now I just want to help us to win more trophies for our amazing fans who follow us everywhere.”
City head coach Nick Cushing praised his captain, saying: “Steph is an exceptional player and leader and over the last three seasons we have seen her grow from strength to strength.
“She embodies the values of our football club and her hard work and dedication, on and off the pitch, have made her a role model for young players everywhere.
“Steph has made an important contribution to the success of the squad since her first season with us and we are delighted she will remain a part of the team as we look to build on the success of the 2016-17 season.”
