Union rep sacked after asking for direct jobs

A NEWLY elected shop steward was sacked yesterday, immediately after asking for contractor electricians to be directly employed.

Construction activists have called a demonstration for Monday morning.

The man had only been working on the building site in Canary Wharf, east London — overseen by building giant Phoenix — for five days when he was elected a union rep.

He had pointed out to managers that he should have been employed in-house, as per national agreements.

Blacklist Support Group secretary Dave Smith told the Star: “Canary Wharf is the spiritual home of financial capitalism.

“If the companies want to have a fight about workers’ rights, we are happy to have it there.”

Monday’s unofficial picket will kick off at 6.30am outside 25 Cabot Square, Canary Wharf.
