THOUSANDS of schools in the districts worst hit by Nepal’s two major earthquakes reopened yesterday.
The Education Ministry ordered that since most school buildings were damaged or unsafe, classes should be held in temporary classrooms.
The earthquakes on April 25 and May 12 destroyed more than 90 per cent of schools in the worst-hit districts of Gorkha, Sindhupalchok and Nuwakot.
According to UN children’s agency Unicef, the country’s high dropout rate was already a major concern, with about 1.2 million children between five and 16 either having dropped out or never having attended.
Radio Nepal reported that students who went to school yesterday were not studying but singing, dancing and talking to teachers about their experiences during the earthquakes.
