Our paper: Big Red Picnic

Four northern Morning Star supporters’ groups gathered in the rugged splendour of the Pennine hills in Lancashire on Saturday for a Big Red Picnic fundraiser at Clarion House, writes Peter Lazenby.

Members of Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Bradford and Calder Valley support groups took part. Seven supporters cycled from Merseyside and Manchester.

The gathering raised the banners of the Calder Valley and Bradford support groups, along with the Morning Star’s national banner — all created by a team led by People’s Press Printing Society member Joan Heath.

Bob Sproule of Bradford group said: “This was a great team effort and I’m grateful for everyone who helped. Despite hurricane-type wind it was a great day. A good number of people passed through during the day.”

The picnic, which raised £211 for the Morning Star, is to become an annual event.

Clarion House is the last countryside clubhouse remaining from a nationwide network built in the early 1900s by pioneers of the Clarion socialist movement to provide shelter, warmth and recreation for workers to enjoy the countryside.
