DAVID CAMERON’S final honours list reveals a “serious type of very British corruption,” one of the former prime minister’s most senior advisers said yesterday.
“David Cameron’s resignation honours list is a symptom of a wider problem: our corrupt and decaying democracy,” wrote former director of strategy Steve Hilton in The Times.
“The corruption comes when the honours system starts to clash with democratic principles.
“The most obvious way this happens is when people who are not elected make the laws which we live under.”
Those nominated for honours by Mr Cameron include numerous personal aides, political donors and senior figures on the losing EU Remain campaign.
As criticism of the list mounted this week, Vitol oil boss Ian Taylor, a major Tory donor, asked for his nomination not to go forward.
