Welsh Football: Newtown reach first final for almost three decades

Matty Owen’s solo effort, deep into the second half, ensured that Newtown claimed their first Welsh Cup final appearance since 1987, after coming from behind to beat Rhyl 2-1 in Saturday’s semi-final.

Ryan Astles opened the scoring for Rhyl after just three minutes.

But Jaswen Owell’s equaliser and Owen’s terrific goal turned things around to put Newton into the final.

They will meet domestic treble-chasing The New Saints, unbeaten all season, who saw off Airbus UK 4-2 after late drama yesterday afternoon.

Airbus nearly secured extra time with a late equaliser but eventually lost out to a controversial third and breakaway fourth in injury time.
