Chiringuita is the princess at Ascot

Our tipster casts his expert eye over the pick of the weekend’s meets

TODAY is all about the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes but the weather could take centre stage with more rain than Noah had to deal with in the region.

It makes favourite Golden Horn slightly vulnerable but the cliche that good horses go on all sorts of ground should still apply here.

For unless the ground becomes very soft then the Derby and Eclipse hero should still beat the old brigade and in decisive fashion at that.

The bet to have is surely an each-way play on Romsdal. John Gosden’s charge was a useful three-year-old last year and was only beaten a nose in the Chester Vase on very deep ground.

He subsequently excelled himself on a much quicker surface when third in the Derby and second in the St Leger and is taken to reverse Yorkshire Cup form with Snow Sky on this slower surface.

In fact if we get really soft ground that duo could emerge as the biggest dangers to the champion three-year-old, while the filly Madame Chiang could run into a place on soft ground she absolutely adores.

However, for betting purposes the best bet on the card could come in the form of Chiringuita in the Princess Margaret Stakes at 2.05, despite having a bundle to find at the weights with the likes of Besharah, Great Page and Rah Rah.

The reason I am plumping for James Bethell’s charge is that she will relish any give in the ground and such a surface will inconvenience her rivals.

I was hugely taken by her Pontefract debut victory over six furlongs when she lengthened in good style up the hill to beat Sinnua by two and three-quarter lengths.

Of those to have run since from that race, all have performed solidly with the sixth also winning and, being a big gangly filly, the selection is sure to have strengthened up in the meantime.

Newmarket have taken a chance watering the ground with the weather forecast and any give in the ground looks sure to suit Valley Of Fire in the three-year-old handicap at 3.40.

This daughter of Firebreak was far from disgraced when behind Magical Memory over course and distance at the July festival.

Dropped 2lbs by the handicapper for that run, and with Nathan Allison taking another 3lbs off his back, he looks an interesting each-way value at a probable double-figure price.

York’s card is unlikely to affected by the impending downpour in the south of England and Prince Gibraltar looks solid for me in the group two Sky Bet York Stakes at 2.55.

The Sky Bet Dash at 3.30 is always a competitive affair and if the ground remains sound then old boy Hoof It can finally return to winning form off what looks a viable mark of 96.

He ran a much better race than his finishing position suggests last time out over C&D behind Mukhmal and is worthy of each-way support against the likes of Tanzeel (needed the run last time out) and See The Sun.

Elsewhere, Western Bella (7.45) catches the eye at Salisbury, while the best bets at Newcastle could come in the form of Karaka Jack (3.20) and Penny Boo, each-way, in the 5.40 off a light weight.
