WOULD-BE Tory MP Afzal Amin jumped before he was pushed yesterday, announcing his resignation in the wake of allegations that he he had hatched a plot with the EDL to gain votes.
The affair led to claims that the Conservative general election campaign is “in chaos” with Prime Minister David Cameron “paralysed by indecision.”
Mr Amin is accused of scheming with the far-right group to announce an inflammatory march against a new “mega-mosque” in the Labour-held marginal constituency of Dudley North.
In his plan, put to former EDL leader Tommy Robinson, who recorded the meeting, Mr Amin would have taken the credit for defusing the situation and getting the protest scrapped, it is claimed.
In return Mr Amin is accused of promising to promote the racist and Islamophobic outfit and be an “unshakeable ally” in Parliament.
Mr Robinson reportedly blew the whistle on the plot because he objected to being used as a pawn.
On Sunday Mr Amin vowed to mount a “robust defence” of his actions in a disciplinary hearing, but Conservative Party sources said yesterday that Mr Amin has resigned as candidate “with immediate effect.”
Labour’s shadow Cabinet Office minister Jon Ashworth said: “It’s right that Afzal Amin has gone, but what on earth took so long? Given the serious allegations involved it was obvious that David Cameron should have expelled him immediately.
Instead he dithered until the candidate himself jumped before he was pushed.
“This deeply damaging episode has exposed a Conservative campaign in chaos and a Prime Minister paralysed by indecision.”
