LONDON Assembly Members doused dangerous Tory plans to lock striking firefighters out of their stations yesterday — but Mayor Boris Johnson could resurrect them.
Labour AMs led emergency opposition to proposals brought forward by London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson on behalf of Boris Johnson.
And they defeated the politically-motivated move with the support of one Green and one Lib Dem AM.
Speaking at the meeting, Labour AM Fiona Twycross said: “The Mayor’s insistence on exploring a policy that has failed elsewhere is literally playing with fire and playing politics with the fire service.
“Effectively locking firefighters out will endanger lives and livelihoods as a result.”
Commissioner Dobson penned a report calling for firefighters who strike for short periods of time to be locked out of their stations for the entire day.
Firefighters have staged a number of two-hour walkouts in their recent dispute against the Tory attack on their pensions.
The report accused firefighters of trying to “maximise the inconvenience and cost to the employer whilst limiting the financial impact on those taking strike action.”
But the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) have pointed out the tactic minimises danger for the public.
They said the Tory’s motive was to break their determined campaign of strikes over plans to make firefighters work to age 60 or lose part of their pension.
FBU London secretary Paul Embery warned yesterday’s meeting the move “would throw the mother of all hand grenades into the national dispute.”
FBU general secretary Matt Wrack added: “The fact that Boris Johnson appears to be pushing for such a provocative approach demonstrates an apparent hatred and hostility towards London’s firefighters.”
A majority of the 17 Assembly Members who sit on London’s Fire Authority heeded Mr Embery’s words.
Eight Labour members, Green AM Darren Johnson and Lib Dem AM Stephen Knight united to defeat the strike-busting plan.
All seven Tory AMs supported the Commissionner’s report.
The Mayor could now use his powers to overrule the Fire Authority and impose the dangerous lockout.
Green AM Mr Johnson called the prospect “almost inevitable sadly” after helping to vote down the move.
