Cyclists saddle up to take aid to refugees in Calais jungle

CYCLING activists Critical Mass will ride to Calais this weekend to donate bikes and supplies to refugees.

The “solidarity bike ride” is being organised on social media and will board ferries from Dover on Saturday.

Groups of riders will make their own arrangements for the trip to the infamous “jungle,” where desperate refugees seeking a safe haven are trapped. Almost 1,000 had signed up to go when the Morning Star went to press.

“It just felt like the right thing to do,” said Rosie Strickland, who runs a community bike workshop in Machynlleth, Powys.
“Our country is actively involved in causing the problems that these people are fleeing,” she said.

“It’s like we are sitting in this gated community and we’re saying: ‘You can’t have access to that but you can’t go home because we are really busy fucking up your country’.”
