LABOUR: Chuka Umunna revealed the worst kept secret in British politics yesterday by confirming he will stand in Labour’s leadership contest.
The Blairite shadow business secretary insisted Labour could bounce straight back in 2020 as he announced his candidacy through a Facebook video.
The flick was shot in Swindon, one of the southern English towns which he says Labour needs to regain power.
“Of the 80 Conservative seats we were targeting, we made a net gain of just four last Thursday,” said Mr Umunna.”
Mr Umunna was the slim favourite to win the contest with bookies yesterday, just ahead of shadow health secretary Andy Burnham.
Labour’s Left Platform met last night to discuss whether there was sufficient support among MPs to get a socialist candidate on the ballot paper.
