Iran: Tudeh Party mourns top communist

THE communist Tudeh Party of Iran has paid tribute to its veteran comrade Hashem Beni Torofi, who was buried on Saturday in Tehran.

Dr Beni Torofi was born in 1926 and studied medicine at the University of Tehran. He joined the Tudeh Party in 1947, six years after its foundation.

He was arrested following the US-British-inspired coup that ousted president Mohammad Mosaddegh in 1953 and spent three years in prison.

He was rearrested by the secret police in 1959 and spent 15 years behind bars.

Dr Beni Torofi joined the Tudeh central committee but was jailed again after the 1979 revolution and the 1983 banning of Tudeh, suffering torture during five years inside.
