Drivers’ second London Tube strike in prospect

DRIVERS’ union Aslef threatened another shutdown of the London Tube last night, calling a 24-hour strike for August 5.

A meeting of the union’s executive approved plans for a repeat walkout in protest at plans to force staff to work nights as part of plans for 24-hour Tube services.

London mayor Boris Johnson admitted last week that the start date of the “night Tube” could be delayed.

Aslef’s previous industrial action was buoyed when fellow rail unions RMT, TSSA and Unite joined the strike leading to a shutdown on every Tube line. Overcrowded bus services were terminated early and Mr Johnson faced the wrath of commuters for failing to find a solution.

A second strike could see similar co-ordinated action.

But sources indicated last night that London Underground may bring an improved offer to the table. Unions have been invited to conciliation talks at Acas this week.
