Islamist infighting kills 630 in Syria

INFIGHTING between Islamic rebel brigades has killed more than 630 people and uprooted over 130,000 since the end of April, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said today.

The clashes in Deir el-Zour province, which borders Iraq, have raged across northern Syria since early January.

They pit rebel groups, including the al-Qaida-affiliated Nusra Front, against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

This war-within-a-war has been a massive drain on resources and manpower on the divided opposition in Syria.

The Observatory said the fighting in Deir el-Zour alone has killed 634 people since April 30.

The tally includes 39 civilians, 354 rebel fighters, including many from the Nusra Front, and 241 from the Islamic State.

The Islamic State withdrew many of fighters to its stronghold in Raqqa earlier this year and has since consolidated its hold on the surrounding province.
