1,200 jobs lost at failing Unipart Automotive

OVER 1,200 jobs have been axed after car parts supplier Unipart Automotive was placed in administration, it was revealed yesterday.

The Solihull-based firm, which employs over 1,800 workers, operated 180 branches and distribution centres.

Thirty-three branches have been sold, transferring 361 jobs.

Another 208 jobs have been retained by administrators. The remaining 1,244 are to be axed.

“This shock news is extremely concerning and will devastate the workforce,” said automotive union Unite national officer Roger Maddison.

These job losses will hit Coventry hard, but will hurt communities across the country as Unipart Automotive is nationwide.

“It is very disappointing that the company has sought administration and not an alternative buyer.

“Administration plunges these 1,224 workers and their families into immediate financial insecurity, denying them redundancy payments and putting their pensions at risk.

“We will be seeking an urgent meeting with the administrator to ensure that the interests of the workforce are top of their considerations.”
