Prime Minister David Cameron faced new protest in the Commons yesterday over plans to “offshore” hundreds of civil service jobs.
In contradiction to his claims that Britain could soon be taking on work and jobs from other countries, 1,000 civil service jobs are being handed to French company Steria through a government partnership.
In Labour MP Paul Blomfield’s Sheffield Central constituency, 239 Department of Work and Pensions jobs are due to go.
He raised the issue in the Commons, but received no reply.
Steria controls 75 per cent of a joint venture company called SSCL, which provides shared services to a number of government departments, including handling sensitive personnel and payroll information.
Now Steria plans to offshore 500 jobs in Sheffield, Leeds and Cardiff.
Public-sector union PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: “The government should act now to keep these jobs in the UK, rather than attempt to cynically exploit the inferior pay and employment conditions that workers abroad face.”
