1,000 call on Barbican to cancel racist exhibition

'Art' showing black people in cages condemned

More than 1,000 people have condemned an exhibition set to be shown at London’s Barbican featuring black people in cages.
A petition demanding that Exhibit B: The Human Zoo be cancelled at the London venue had yesterday attracted more than 1,100 signatures.
The controversial exhibition by South African artist Brett Bailey was originally shown at Edinburgh University but is due to run at the Barbican from September 23-27.
“This is not art,” said Black Activists Rising Against Cuts national co-founder Zita Holbourne, who is an artist and curator herself.
“It is vile and horrific. We don’t need to see images of black people in cages to understand the history of racist oppression.”The Barbican responded to a letter written by Ms Holbourne, in which it defended the exhibition as challenging racism, which she and campaigners reject.
