'Resume aid to Egypt,' urges Gen Sissi

RETIRED General Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, who is campaigning to become Egyptian president, called on the US today to resume military aid worth £776 million a year.

Gen Sissi said: “We are fighting a war against terrorism.”

“The Egyptian army is undertaking major operations in Sinai so it is not transformed into a base for terrorism.

“We need American support to fight terrorism, we need American equipment to use to combat terrorism.”

One person was killed during clashes in Cairo overnight between supporters and opponents of deposed president Mohamed Morsi.

Four people were also arrested during violence that broke out at a pro-Morsi gathering.

Since the Egyptian army ousted Mr Morsi, it has waged a crackdown on protests that has seen more than 1,400 people killed and 15,000 arrested.

Almost 500 security personnel have been killed in a wave of attacks carried out in retaliation.
