IN THE mid-’90s, Asian Dub Foundation masterfully combined Asian and British musical influences, underpinned with a frenetic toughness reflecting the realities of working-class Asian youth at the time.

With this album they prove they still retain their hallmark energy, intensity and inventiveness. Stand out tracks include Blade Ragga, a heavy-rock take on classic jungle and Semira, a dub-punk instrumental which recalls the impassioned urgency of Sandinista-era Clash. Their genre-blending never sounds contrived — so much so, you almost wonder how hardcore drum and bass ever existed without Qawwali harmonies gliding over the riddim. 

Yet aside from some fairly generic denunciations of politicians and calls to “stand up,” there’s not much going on lyrically.

Nevertheless, if there was ever an act that reflects the cultural fusion of Britain today, it is ADF.
