‘Nobody can do this job better than me,’ claims Redknapp

MICHAEL McCANN was on hand to see four goals in seven minutes as Liverpool left Loftus Road with a 3-2 win

Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp said “nobody could do the QPR job better than me” despite a 3-2 defeat at home to Liverpool yesterday.

Redknapp was adamant in saying he “could not a give a monkeys” about speculation concerning his future, maintaining that “we will stay up.” A last-gasp own goal from Steven Caulker cruelly denied his side a deserved point after substitute Eduardo Vargas equalised twice, while Brendan Rodgers was not pleased with Liverpool’s performance.

“That was nowhere near what I expect — we didn’t play well today but we won,” said Rogers. “The players showed remarkable courage and character and Raheem Sterling was outstanding.”

Redknapp admits that his side were “a bit naive” but maintains that “we didn’t get what we deserved today, it was an absolute injustice.” He also criticised out-of-favour player Adel Taarabt, who “doesn’t want to train or play — I am fitter than him at the moment.”

The scoring was opened when Richard Dunne became the first player to score 10 Premier League own goals, after a quick free-kick from Sterling. Rodgers praised his “brightness and cleverness” while Redknapp lambasted his side’s defending as “farcical.”

This was harsh on QPR, who were “miles the better team in the first-half,” according to Redknapp. Charlie Austin was denied well by Simon Mignolet and Leroy Fer hit the bar twice in five minutes. Both opportunities came through good work from Bobby Zamora, who Redknapp says Liverpool “could not deal with due to his strength.”

The second-half saw Liverpool improve as Rogers “flipped the midfield triangle to try Gerrard at number 10 as the team dynamic has changed this season.”

The game became open and frenetic, with Mignolet tested multiple times, while Balotelli could only blaze over when an open goal presented itself. The Italian had a forgettable afternoon, though Rodgers says that “he is working really hard, it just isn’t dropping for him.”

Substitute Vargas deservedly levelled late on for QPR with a header but Liverpool regained the lead with a superb counter-attack, as Steven Gerrard and Sterling fed Philippe Coutinho, who cut inside and produced a precise finish.

QPR equalised again in stoppage time as Vargas scrambled in from a corner, though another counter-attack through Coutinho then Sterling ended in a cross that Caulker converted.

Though Liverpool ultimately secured their sixth win in seven against Rangers, Redknapp steadfastly maintains that “we will stay up.”
