Sport in brief: October 29, 2024

BASEBALL:

The LA Dodgers won 4-2 at the New York Yankees to take a 3-0 lead in the best of seven World Series finals on Tuesday morning.

A win in Wednesday morning’s match at Bronx’s Yankee Stadium will give the Dodgers their second championship in five years.

The omens are not good for the 27-time winners New Yorkers as no team has ever come from 3-0 down to claim the Commissioner’s Trophy.

MEN’S FOOTBALL:

Brazil’s recent dominance of the Copa Libertadores, South America’s equivalent to the Champions League, looks sets to continue as Atletico Mineiro from Belo Horizonte take a 3-0 lead into tomorrow morning’s second leg of their semi-final at Argentina’s River Plate.

The other last-four tie sees Botafogo from Rio de Janeiro defending a 5-0 advantage over Uruguay’s Penarol.

Brazilian teams have won six of the last seven tournaments.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE:

World champions Australia will travel to take on England in three test matches for the first time in more than 20 years after the Kangaroos announced plans to relocate 2025’s planned Ashes to the northern hemisphere.

The three-match series will be played in London and on either side of the Pennines.

The last Ashes were held in 2003 when Australia battled to a 3-0 win over a joint Great Britain team.

MEN’S FOOTBALL:

Joint table-toppers Aberdeen put their unbeaten record on the line when they host third-placed Rangers in the pick of this evening’s full set of Scottish Premiership fixtures.

Fourth plays fifth as Dundee United play Motherwell, Dundee are at defending champions Celtic, struggling Hearts take on Kilmarnock, out-of-form St Mirren are up against St Johnstone and bottom club Hibernian travel to Dingwall to face Ross County.
