China: Maoist error slated again

THE Chinese Communists’ official voice, the People’s Daily, reaffirmed the party’s historical judgement yesterday that the Cultural Revolution was a catastrophic error.

The paper praised Deng Xiaoping’s 1981 party resolution condemning the bloody movement launched by Mao Zedong to assert his primacy.

“Our party has long taken a solemn attitude towards bravely admitting, correctly analysing and firmly correcting the mistakes of our leadership figures,” it read.

The article stressed that the positive attitude shown by criticising the Cultural Revolution had “alerted the Chinese Communist Party and helped it return to a correct track for the primary stage of socialism.”
