Honduras: Eco-activist death to be probed by special team

A SPECIAL commission is investigating the death of an indigenous rights campaigner just four months after another activist was killed, Honduras’s Public Ministry said yesterday.

Lesbia Janeth Urquia’s body was discovered on Wednesday in a rubbish dump in Marcala. She disappeared on Tuesday afternoon.

The Council of Popular and Indigenous Organisations of Honduras (Copinh), of which Ms Urquia was a member, called her death a “political femicide.”

It said she led protests against hydroelectric projects in the La Paz region, particularly the Aurora I dam.

The murder has parallels with the March killing of fellow Copinh campaigner Berta Caceres at her home.

Ms Caceres had campaigned against the Agua Zarca dam being built on ancestral lands of her Lenca nation by hydroelectric firm Desa.

Authorities have arrested a Desa manager, a security contractor and two army officers in connection with her death.
