TUNISIAN prime minister-designate Habib Essid’s leadership looked to be on the rocks today after yet another party lined up against his mooted cabinet.
Mr Essid’s Nida Tunis party, which dominated the elections, presented a cabinet on Friday containing just one partner, giving the coalition just 102 seats in the 217-strong assembly.
The Islamist Ennahda party and the left-of-centre Popular Front have already rejected the cabinet and Afek Tounes said today that it would also oppose it in a vote planned for tomorrow.
“We have decided to vote against Mr Essid’s government because it is not representative, it’s not a government that includes all the parties that won the elections,” said Afek Tounes leader Rim Majoub.
President Beji Caid Essebsi would have to appoint a new premier to form a cabinet if parliament rejects the current offering.
Delegates from Afek Tounes, who had been nominal allies of Nida Tunis, walked out of the negotiations last week.
Nida Tunis holds 86 seats and has some backing from the secular UPL party, which has 16 seats.
Nida Tunis assembly member Abdelaziz Kotti has said support for the new cabinet is not even unanimous within the party itself.
